If you’ve never lived in the Hawaiian islands before, and you’re considering a move to Maui, you’ll find that the most significant difference between our state and all the others in the U.S. is the logistical side of getting around. In the other 49 states, you can easily drive to most places, or take a long road trip to any other state!
Being an island chain, you have to get used to the fact that in Hawaii, you’ll need to hop on a plane or two to see the other parts of the state. While this isn’t as convenient as driving, the benefit is that each island feels like a world all on its own, and all of them are unique in many ways. As you get to know the other islands of Hawaii, expect a lot of diversity in your experiences. For example, Oahu is the most urban of the islands, Kauai has a very low population and a lot of rainforest, while the Big Island is enormous, even compared to Maui. As for our favorite island, we enjoy a nice balance of development and nature, and the size of the island is manageable but not small. If you blended the traits of the other islands, you’d probably get something a lot like Maui.
As for how to handle inter-island travel, you’ll want to keep an eye out for affordable flights, and take advantage when you can. Conveniently, there have been some recent additions to air service on Maui. Mokulele Airlines recently announced that it will be providing service between Maui and the Waimea airport on the Big Island, starting tomorrow.
Flights will be provided daily between Kahului Airport on Maui and Waimea-Kohala Airport on the Big Island. Connections to Honolulu International Airport will also be available. This service was made possible by a four-year $1.76 million essential air service contract that was awarded to the airline by the U.S. Department of Transportation, so you can expect the availability of this service to remain stable.
With any luck, affordable inter-island travel will continue to develop, and those who choose West Maui real estate will enjoy convenient island-hopping whenever they choose! Mahalo for reading!
