Humpback whales are gentle giants that are famous for their singing abilities – belting out seductive ballads to attract mates or to challenge other would-be suitors. Their unique hunting skill, called bubblenet feeding, involves a group of Humpbacks working together to capture schools of herring. These marine mammals travel great distances to take advantage of the best breeding grounds and feeding spots. North Pacific Humpbacks, for example, mate and give birth in Hawaii and then travel to Alaska each summer to feed.
With its warm weather, crystal clear tropical waters, and gentle channel, Maui is one of the best places for whale watching in the entire world. Humpback whales come to Maui every winter to give birth to their calves, mate, and socialize. During this period, Humpback whales are highly active on the surface, dazzling onlookers with breaches, spy hops, and tail lobbing. Visitors and locals have greatly enjoyed these above-water performances, especially during the common accompaniment of playful Spinner Dolphins.
A stroll along the Kaanapali Beach Walk touches on Kaanapali’s long history of use by Hawaiians as a fishing place, the site of a village called Keka’a, and the subject of many mo’olelo (stories), but its present as a still-growing resort is equally evident. Forty years after the first maile lei was untwined at the Sheraton Maui (Jan. 26, 1963), local folks still come to Kaanapali to fish or play on the beach. But they are just as likely to visit the area to golf the Robert Trent Jones-designed Tournament North course or the designated “woman-friendly” Resort South course. From Kaanapali Alii to the Maui Kaanapali Villas, Kaanapali Beach offers many offshore activities that include swimming, surfing, body boarding, sailing, snorkeling/diving, parasailing, charter fishing, and whale watching. And though this all takes place within a fairly compact area, the beach and the sea beyond manage to retain an uncrowded look and feel.
If you are considering buying a condo on Maui, Kaanapali Beach is a very smart choice for such an investment. Take a look at The Whaler, the Mahana, or the Kaanapali Alii for Kaanapali Beach condos.
